Military | Pupilles de la Garde
On 1 September 1810 the 'Royal Dutch Velites' (orphans or sons of serving soldiers, aged fifteen to sixteen years old) entered French service; Napoleon reviewed them at the Tuilleries and was so impressed with their drill and bearing that on 1 June 1811 he took their nine battalions into the Imperial Guard as the 'Pupilles'. In April 1814 they declared for the provisional government of the Netherlands and adpoted the orange cockade. |
